Phonics

Phonics classes are designed to teach children the relationship between letters and sounds, helping them develop reading and writing skills. Phonics is a method of teaching children to decode words by sounds (phonemes) rather than by recognizing whole words. It is particularly effective for early literacy development, typically targeting children in preschool and early elementary school.

What is Phonics?

Phonics involves:

Phonemic Awareness: Recognizing and manipulating sounds in spoken words.

Letter-Sound Correspondence: Learning how each letter (or letter combination) corresponds to specific sounds.

Blending: Combining sounds to form words.

Segmenting: Breaking down words into individual sounds.

What Happens in a Phonics Class?

1. Learning Letter Sounds: Children start by learning the sounds of individual letters (e.g., “s” sounds like /s/).

2. Blending Sounds: They practice combining sounds to read simple words (e.g., /c/ /a/ /t/ = “cat”).

3. Phonics Games and Activities: These may include flashcards, songs, storytelling, and interactive games to make learning fun.

4. Reading Practice: Children gradually move from simple to more complex words and sentences.

5. Writing Exercises: They practice writing letters and words, reinforcing the connection between sounds and letters.
